This was discussed a few hours ago on fink-devel:

There was a recent change to split system-xfree86 into 4.2 and 4.3 versions.
When I do a fink update, I got the following error:
[]
 system-xfree86 conflicts with x11
system-xfree86-42 provides x11 and is to be installed.

This has been discussed a couple of hours ago on this list: The new package works only for a first-time install, not for an update. You have to use force (and dpkg) to install the update. Either

 sudo dpkg -r --force-depends system-xfree86
 fink install system-xfree86

or

sudo dpkg -i --force-all /sw/fink/dists/unstable/main/binary-darwin-powerpc/x11-system/system- xfree86-42_4.2-1_darwin-powerpc.deb
fink install system-xfree86
(the latter line is then probably superfluous)

And don't try the update remotely via ssh while you are not logged in at the console. It will hang.

/sw/bin/fink update-all
Information about 2879 packages read in 3 seconds.
fink needs help picking an alternative to satisfy a virtual dependency. The
candidates:
(1) system-xfree86-42: Placeholder: XFree86 4.2.x and Apple X11 beta 3
(2) system-xfree86-43: Placeholder: XFree86 4.3.x and Apple X11 1.0
-----------

I have Apple X11 beta 3 (is there anything else?), but neither option works for me.

Please help: I cannot "update-all" any more.
