"Recent selfupdate-cvs" didn't mean much yesterday, the sourceforge anoncvs had been responsive, but dead, for about a week. It seems to have been resurrected today. So maybe another selfupdate-cvs solves your problem. Or switch to rsync.

getting an error in compiling the netpbm files. Here is a section from the latest attempt:

install -d -m 755 /sw/src/root-netpbm-bin-10.18-2/sw
mv /sw/src/root-netpbm10-10.18-2/sw/bin /sw/src/root-netpbm-bin-10.18-2/sw/

mv: rename /sw/src/root-netpbm10-10.18-2/sw/share/man/man1 to /sw/src/root-netpb
m-bin-10.18-2/sw/share/man//man1: No such file or directory

Yeah, that's what everybody is getting with the wrong version. With some versions, the result you got depended on whether the file /etc/webman.conf existed (file installed apparently by netpbm, too).

Unfortunately, "10.18-2" doesn't tell the whole story, there were several revisions on CVS of the same file.
