Could you look in the config.log file for more details? It is in /sw/src/ncurses-5.3-20031018-2/ncurses-5.3 and at the end it should show you why the commands "$CC -E" and "$CC -E -traditional-cpp" failed for you. You must have something unusual in your installation.
Some guesses: Do you set the environment variable CC in one of your shell startup scripts? Or is your Fink installed in /usr/local instead of /sw? Or does your partition have spaces in its name?
