There may not be a simple answer to this question: But which window managers work with Apple's X11 Beta 3 under Mac OS X 10.2.6?
I just installed Fink 0.6.1 from scratch. I understood that Apple's August 2003 GCC Updater was necessary to install in order to have the command line app "fink" work properly with the rest of the 0.6.1 environment. So I installed that one too. Then I installed Apple's X11 Beta 3 (since I'm still using Jagwire). And, finally, the SDK stuff from Apple.
When I start Apple's X11, I keep exec quartz-wm in my .xinitrc file. Then I launch KDE with the usual startkde command. KDE seems to run fine (but there is an issue with garbish letters in several help files). If I try to run window managers, like for instance Enlightenment, Black Box and Window Maker, and remove exec quartz-wm inside my .xinitrc file by using e.g. exec wmaker instead, neither of my "start-up" X11 apps (xterm, xclock, etc.) have window decorations. Apple's X11 doesn't seem to pick up the exec command or it doesn't accept it when I execute something else than quartz-wm.
I suppose exec quartz-wm will have to stay put as long as I use my own .xinitrc file. At least, the Fink documentation is stressing so. But what would be the proper commands if I prefer to use window managers like those listed above? Or will I have to use something else than Apple's X11? And how does the more bloated option Gnome work with Apple's X11?
Best regards, Hans Trygve Jensen
