The font errors aren't the problem (for KDE). Are you launching KDE from .xinitrc or from a terminal after X11 has starte?
You might try, if you don't have this set up already, starting KDE like so (from .xinitrc): /sw/bin/startkde >/tmp/kde.log 2>&1 Then you can check in /tmp/kde.log to see what the problem might be.
