There is also Fink Commander, which (despite rumors to the contrary) is still usable on 10.3. I don't think that aptitude, synaptic, etc. are available for OSX--they aren't in Fink's package database, anyway.

Fink Commander basically provides a GUI interface to apt-get and the fink command (source installation).

Is it just me, or is dselect quite confusing and difficult to use?

dselect is horrendous. Use apt instead. There's the "demo" interface called 'apt-get' which is usable, or use a nice front-end like aptitude.

(Is aptitude available on OSX? I just started researching OSX to
support a friend who has it, but I personally I use debian.)

Is there an advantage to using 'dselect'

IMO, no.
