If you don't have the file /usr/include/search.h, you need to install the package DevSDK.pkg from the Xcode CD.
thanks martin. is that available from apple as a download by chance? i thought i had the 'developer tools' installed...
I don't know if it is downloadable(*). One of the biggest problems with Apple's installers is that they alway leave essential parts out of "easy installations". You should *always* choose "custom installation" and, for developer tools, check *everything*.
