A step further .... I installed xfree-4.3.99-16 from rsync and it starts with its first display (fullscreen vs rootless) then stops.
Terminal says:

I'm sorry, there is no 4.3.99-16, and this looks like a 4.3.0 kind of error. What X do you have installed exactly?
