Many thanks for your help. I removed fink, reinstalled and everything is working. A few days ago I did have a system crash when battery ran down. Perhaps I was in fink and tar/gtar became corrupted.
I find not knowing why software doesn't work very unsatisfying intellectually, but what can one do? Too many programs that are complex, let alone the interaction between them. And I console myself with idea that removing and reinstalling software is akin to trouble shooting digital electronics. Isolate the malfunctioning board and swap it out.
