How do I get Fink to recognise the Apple X11 that is already installed?
There is no other answer to this question than what you already heard and what is summarized in the FAQ#8.11 http://fink.sourceforge.net/faq/usage-packages.php#apple-x11-wants-xfree86
Sometimes Apple's installer forgets to install some files and needs a second run. Several people had to install X11SDK twice until it got recognized.
The same holds for fink (the program) itself, unfortunately. Sometimes it forgets to switch your "Distribution" to 10.3. If this is your case (i.e. you are on OSX 10.3 and either your "Distributions" line in /sw/etc/fink.conf points to 10.2-gcc3.3 instead of 10.3 or your /sw/fink/dists is a symbolic link to 10.2-gcc3.3 instead of 10.3), then you need to run "fink reinstall fink" (*not* to reinstall the whole Fink distribution!) or to run "sudo /sw/lib/fink/postinstall.pl".
