[Fink-beginners] Fink Newbie

I've just installed fink on OS x.2 and when I try to run the dselect 
program the first menu comes up ok, but when I do a select it no 
longer displays letters.  the display is all kinds of ASCII 
Characters, its impossible to read.

Is there a configure setting that needs to be changed?

I tried googleing but came up empty.
