I'm having difficulties installing Fink packages that use X-windows on my 10.3.2 (Panther) version of OS X. My difficulties are similar to those described by others in this thread, but the workarounds that I've found documented on the Fink website don't work for me.

I am trying to install emacs. Whe I type "fink install emacs21" fink asks me if I want to install xfree86 and xfree86-shlibs. I exit the installation at this point, because I want to use the version of X that shipped in Panther.

As I understand it, what I need to do is get fink to recognize that I have the system-xfree86 virtual package installed. If at this point I type "fink-virtual-pkgs" I see several virtual packages listed, but system-xfree86 is not among them.

I tried doing the procedure outlined in FAQ 8.11. I did a "dpkg -r --force-all" of all the X packages listed in the FAQ. Fink replied that none of those packages were currently installed. Then I deleted /Library/Receipts/X11SDK.pkg and /Library/Receipts/X11User.pkg. Then I ran "fink selfupdate" and "fink index". Then I reinstalled X11User.pkg from Panther Disk 3 and X11SDK.pkg from the XTools CD. After all this I reran "fink-virtual-pkgs", but still didn't see a system-xfree86 entry. And my attempts to install emacs21 still prompt for the xfree86 and xfree86-shlibs packages.

Any ideas? What else can I look at? How does fink know when a virtual package is installed?

Thanks.
