run 'fink selfupdate' which will fetch the newest package descriptions.

I am having trouble using fink. I have installed fink, but when I type in
fink list
I only get 40 applications listed, almost all of which are already installed on my computer.
For instance, the application "wget" is not listed.
Q4.7 on the page http://fink.sourceforge.net/faq/usage-fink.php#bindist seems to adress this issue, but when I type in
fink install wget
I get out:
Information about 40 packages read in 1 seconds. no package found for "wget" Failed: no package found for specification 'wget'!
I am confused. There is a stable version of this program, and I have installed Developer Tools. Can anyone help me? Thank you, and I appologize for posting such an elementary problem.
