I had the same problem and solved it by reinstalling Qt3 (be sure to re-config it, remove the .deb from your system), all Gnome and all Kde (same think, re-config them).
Its maybe a little bit extreme but Kde is now working (I have a sound problem but I think its unrelated)
I think my pb was that Qt3 and some essential gnome/kde components were compiled for the "threaded" version of Xfree86 and could not work anymore with the common one. Futheremore some components choosen for Kde/Gnome are found in different "flavors" : for Xfree << 4.3 or for Xfree >= 4.3. I guess if you dont want to rebuild all Gnome & Kde, those at least should be changed. Maybe fore-changed if you dont want to remove all the dependancies.
I had the very same error you describe :
/sw/lib/libqt-mt.3.dylib undefined reference to _FT_Access_Frame expected to be defined in /usr/X11R6/lib/libfreetype.6.dylib
And as I said now it works
