I've decided to try my hand with Gnome2. I downloaded and compiled gnome-core, gnome-desktop, and gnome-session, together with necessary dependencies, from the unstable tree. Compilation was fine. I modified my .xinitrc file so that there is a line that reads 'exec gnome-session' (w/o quotes). I also commented out the line that starts Apple's quartz-wm. When I start X11 I get the following error from Gnome, inside a XWindow text box:

There was an error starting the Gnome Settings Daemon:

The Settings Daemon was restarted too many times.

The last error message was:

Failed to Activiate "OAFIID:GNOME_SettingsDaemon"

Closing the text box gave me a blank screen with the generic "X" cursor.

Here's the output from my console:

Any ideas? Thanks.
