it worked. Now that I have it all compiled and installed. How do i start gnome ?
how should i edit my .xinitrc. I am using apple's X11 on panther.

You cannot install both flavors of the gome-vfs2 at the same time, the ones with and without -ssl. Since you have the ones without ssl already installed, you have to remove them first if you are sure you want to switch to the ones with ssl. This will probably not be possible with a simple "fink remove" because of dependency problems, so you need to use
"dpkg --remove --force-depends gnome-vfs2".
