Okay, so I'm taking my first baby steps into Unix world. Yesterday I did the
following:

Installed Fink
Installed Fink Commander
Installed Deveoper's Tools Disc from Apple in order to get the correct version
of GCC compiler.
Installed wget, which was to be my first self-installed unix tool on Mac OSX
(aside from fink itself)

At the end of all that I was able to install and compile wget, but could not
launch it from bash. After looking in a few in one of the guide books it was
apparent that there was a path issue as wget was in /sw/bin and apparently my
path settings were not correct.

Attempting to correct the problem, I tried to follow some confusing
instructions in the two books about updating my path setings. (Don't ask me to
reproduce the commands I tried to typed. It was set path = in combined with
various directories that I cannot remember ... Part of the problem with my
confusion is that the two books I used were apparently geared toward Jaguar,
not Panther and therefore assumed tsch as the default shell, not bash.)

The upshot of all this is as follows:
Now when I launch a bash terminal window, I still can't execute wget, and more
troublingly, I can no longer execute fink from bash (though fink commander
still seems to work).
My concerns are:
1) Did I cause some scary, permanent damage to my default settings by screwing
with the path as I did?
2) will that affect any other parts of the system?
3) is there a way to reset my path settings to their default point, ie to put
things back the way they were before I started mucking about?
and finally 4) how then to correct the original problem of not being able
execute wget?

Sorry if this is all old newbie territory, but I should have quit and joined
this list last night before messing around with my path settings. Sorry also if
I'm not getting the terminology correct...this unix stuff is all new,
fascinating and potentially dangerous territory for this old mac-fiend. Thanks
in advance one and all for suggestions on-list or off as appropriate.

Arik
