[Fink-beginners] proper .xinitrc file

I  knew this  once but like all important details I  have forgotten or 
half-forgotten how to do this. I am running Panther, X11 and have 
installed  Gnome 2.4 and KDE.  Can someone direct me to how to set up 
an .xinitrc file that will allow me to start these apps.? Currently, 
KDE freezes and Gnome 2.4 dies an early demise.
Thank you and sorry to ask such an obvious  question.
