Thank you all for your excellent input.. Your help along with a new post in the Macosxhints forum got me set up just right.
what I did was follow the hint that allows you to have a rootless apple X11 as well as rooted kde or gnome sessions.
I only set up the gnome aspect of this hint as that is all I've got compiled for now.
And yes, I had to fix my fink.conf to have the unstable stuff mentioned at the _front_ of the tree list not the end.
So this is what I ended up with.
a new .xinitrc with only these two lines
source /sw/bin/init.sh
/usr/X11R6/bin/quartz-wm
and a .xinitrc.gnome with these two lines.
source /sw/bin/init.sh
exec gnome-session
Then I created a menu entry for windowed Gnome within X11 through 'Applications/Customize...' that looked like this
name field :: command field
--------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------
Gnome xinit ~/.xinitrc.gnome -- /usr/X11R6/bin/Xnest :3 -geometry 1000x650+20+60

the post by 'by' (aka Michael) is the illuminating hint that was the final straw that broke the camel's ignorant back.

I encountered this same error and found a solution on a Gnome discussion forum. Make sure you have installed the package control-center (as well as the dev and shlibs variants). This should take care of it.
