I just installed Panther and now want to update a number of outdated packages. Using Fink Commander I tried to install a TCL/Tk package and receive the following response:
You have an existing X11 installation in /usr/X11R6 and/or /etc/X11.
This package refuses to overwrite these. Remove them, then tell Fink to
install xfree86 again. (The package won't be recompiled.) If you want
to keep your X11 installation, install system-xfree86 resp. system-xtools
instead to make this known to Fink's package system.
I don't wish to remove Apple's X11, so I tried to install system-xfree86 (I assume it's the virtual package)
and get the response "nothing to install".
What should I be doing to get the TCL/Tk application to compile and install.
Help would be appreciated.
As system-xfree86 is a virtual package, it's supposed to be installed automatically. Check the FAQ:
http://fink.sourceforge.net/faq/usage-packages.php#apple-x11-wants-xfree86
Also, if you are compiling, you need to install the X11 SDK as well.
