The error is much earlier in your build. Try going back to the last thing the compiler tried to run.

i tried and tried to use the fink-beginners archives but can't figure out
how to wade though it all. search was way too slow. can it all not be
organized by subject?

i'm a unix newbie, understand command line i suppose but have no real sense
of how it all is configured. ie. just where do fink installed apps go
anywho? i successfully installed pymol but don't know where it is or more
importantly how to move it to another machine. move the whole sw directory,
or part?

Check out http://fink.sourceforge.net/doc/packaging/fslayout.php#fhs

To move to another machine you can indeed move the whole /sw/directory--that's the beauty of Fink.

what i really need is a tutorial to explain what fink is actually doing
(directory by directory, file by file). ie. what's everything in the sw
directory for and what's it all doing, etc? does such a tutorial exist? am i
just missing something due to an unfamiliarity with unix systems in general?

also, i'm not sure at all how to get fink to install a package i already
downloaded.

Do you mean a source tarball? You can do this automatically by putting the source tarball in /sw/src if the package is already in the Fink distribution and is the same version as to what Fink wants to install.

someone please toss me a map. . . or at least a legend. . .

yeah,
