Here on my machine a Power Mac G4 Dual 1.42 Ghz Xfree86 4.4.0
neither speeded up nor slowed down the executing of my
windowmanager or gnome. Subjective I would say that pure
Windowmanagers like enligthenment and twm, blackbox and fluxbox may
start up a bit faster but if you are using KDE/gnome start up time
is as long or short as before.

Quarz-WM won't get messed up. It stays were it is you only have to
be carefull when you remove your old X11 that you keep quarz-wm
installed. So be sure that you keep a copy of quarz-wm in a safe
place, best is on a second partition different from the one you
would like to install Xfree 4.4.0, then remove the Apple's X11,
that really prevents you from things getting messed up, install
Xfree and move back quarz-wm.

To remove any X11 equal if it's from Apple or Xfree or whatever
company you have to delete:
/etc/X11
/usr/X11R6
/Applications/XDarwin or X11.app

You know how to use the rm command?

Again. Save quarz-wm since it lies in one of the directories
mentioned above and you easy oversee this! I know what I am talkin
about...

Only thing I discovered in Xfree86 up to now is that I am no longer
able to use @ and with a german keyboard in whatever word
processor I use. I tried it with OpenOffice.org, Abiword and
various editors. Same with some special chars that need a key combo
like the in caf.

In conclusion if you are happy with the X11 you have you should
stick to it and rember never change a running system. Sometimes
living on the bloody edge of having the newest software installed
has it's risks.

Hope this helps.

Eric Hoch
