I'm trying to install octave on my g4 power book. no use now the list does not even lists it, but on the web it is still there.
You need to update your own package local database. Which one this is depends on the method you chose for installing octave, binary or source. For installation from binary you would go to a Terminal window and type the commands
fink scanpackages sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install octave
