What I mean is I use the Fink installer then open up bash, when cash opens it outputs an error message saying permission deniged /sw/bin/init.sh. So I wnet and changed the permission on the init.sh file because it did not have execute permission, which . /sw/bin/init.sh seems to be trying to do. After that I no longer got the error message when starting bash. After that I noticed my .bash_profile was no longer working. I would type something that was supposed to be included in my path from the .bash_profile and it would not work and when I typed env at the command prompt it confimed they were not included in my path. So I deleted the . /sw/bin/init.sh from the .bash_profile and restarted bash and checked the env variables and the ones I had in my .bash_profile were once again included like they are supposed to be. I run the installer again it puts the . /sw/bin/init.sh into the .bash_profile and once again when I restart bash they are no longer being included (working).

You don't need execute permissions on /sw/bin/init.sh for running ".
/sw/bin/init.sh". If this fails, something else must be wrong. Hard to
guess what without knowing the precise sequence of events and the
precise error message.

What do you mean by "stopped working"?

What do you mean by "it breaks again"?
