Hello strider.

My name is D. Hhn and I handle most of the PR for Fink. I must confess,
that I do not quite understand what you are asking, but I know that many
beginners might have the same train of thought, that is why I would
appreciate it, if we could both work to an answer.

Fink is not a product. Fink per se is a piece of software combining many
parts to create a package management suite. Fink can keep track of what
you install, where, when and how. That way it becomes easy to upgrade,
downgrade, install or deinstall a particular piece of software. Fink is
special, because it does not install software as you might know it from
the macintosh world. Fink does not deal with application bundles, nor
does it install frameworks (well not yet). It was built to install and
deal with UNIX specific applications. Those pieces of software often
need to be adjusted so that they can run on Mac OS X, Fink also takes
care of that part. The software itself might run together with X11, it
might have a graphical front end, it might be graphical only or it has
no graphical front end at all and is merely meant to run on the command
line. Some pieces of software only offer interfaces to specific
functions for other pieces of software.

I hope that gets you going with the right idea. I would recommend, that
you familiarise yourself with the basic concept of command lines, UNIX
and what it might be able to do for you as an "old school" Macintosh user.
