That, I didn't know--I use the Fink tetex* packages, myself, since I think I can trust Fink to install everything correctly.

As do I ;-) . I came across this missing kpathsea.a error when I tried to help a colleague with his Fink installation. He just wanted one little package, pari-gp, and I had advertised Fink as "very easy: You just download the installer, follow the instructions, and then say 'fink install pari-gp'". Didn't work, of course, and it took us 2 hours together to get there (This was Fink 0.6.2 on Panther; I think with the 0.7.0 distribution it would have been much smoother). He had already spent some hours falling into all the usual traps, rebuilding xfree86 although X11 was installed etc, and one of them was this missing dev package from GWtex.
