After a bit more digging, it seems that the downgrade from 5.8 to 5.6 had not been clean. I removed all of the perl5.6 files that had been put back in place, and resinstalled the 5.6 files that I had put in an archive. After that, fink is running again. :-)

If you need Perl 5.8 for something, you could try installing the Fink package for it--it leaves your 5.6 version in place.
