[Fink-beginners] cannot selfupdate

I receive the following message when trying to selfupdate fink:
Can't stat /sw/fink: No such file or directory
at /sw/lib/perl5/Fink/SelfUpdate.pm line 328
Failed: Can't move "/sw/fink" out of the way

I guess the question is how do I move /sw/fink out of the way when there is no such file.
