Just a couple questions, based on my experiences as a newbie, that might save some time later...
Is there any basic set of stuff that I ought to have downloaded to have on board BEFORE I keep trying to download my ultimate target, GRAMPS, or any other application? I've downloaded the latest Developer Tools (April release, updated from December's), Perl stuff, et. al.
Is there anything else I should just go get so it's there?
The only things that you ever have to go and download are - besides a complete Mac OS X system - the developer tools and the X11 packages.
Everything else is taken care of automatically by Fink. If you download and install other things (in particular "Perl stuff") on your own without knowing what you are doing, chances are that you get into trouble.
Or does it all depend on the program, like GRAMPS? GRAMPS said the system should have two things (which I got), but I keep finding other stuff that is lacking that I have to go and find or update. Is my experience typical, or am I just dealing with a particularly eccentric program?
There never should be anything that you "have to go and find or update". Fink does this for you. Or are you trying to build gramps outside of Fink?
