Since this machine is at work I decided to keep only stable stuff on it so my LAN administrator wouldn't get to upset with me (he doesn't like Macs to begin with and he really doesn't like it when I fool around with mine).

It seems I will have to force remove it.

Strange. Did you switch to unstable sometime in the past and then back to stable? You seem to have the db3-shlibs package from unstable installed. If you still have the db3-*.deb file from when you compiled that version from unstable, you could also install db3 manually (sudo dpkg -i) from that deb file.
[]Version of db3-shlibs on system is 3.3.11-24.
