I think this may be like what went on in:

http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php? forum_id=4714&style=flat&viewday=10&viewmonth=200402

i.e. something in the dependencies that's mixing two incompatible versions of some package.

I wonder if it's Ruby. What would i do to find out? I can try setting the environment to print the libraries, but what else?

Not sure--do you have multiple versions of ruby?

I think this is ordinary though. I had previously gotten an error that installation of ruby-dev failed; can't batch install. But I think everything else was installed correctly. I'm running scanpackages and selfupdates again to see if that fixes things (since swig will want to be updated).

Perhaps I could remove and then reinstall it if that doesn't work...

bash-2.05b$ fink list ruby
Information about 3131 packages read in 12 seconds.
i ruby 1.8.0-1 Symlinks to ruby1.8
ruby-dev 1.8.0-1 Compatibility package
i ruby-shlibs 1.6.7-15 Interpreted, object-oriented scripting language
ruby16 1.6.8-1 Interpreted, object-oriented scripting language
ruby16-dev 1.6.8-1 ruby shared library symlink :)
ruby16-shlibs 1.6.8-1 ruby shared library
i ruby18 1.8.0-1 Interpreted, object-oriented scripting language
i ruby18-dev 1.8.0-1 ruby static library
i ruby18-shlibs 1.8.0-1 ruby shared libraries
bash-2.05b$

Maybe it's ruby-shlibs. Possibly some package depends on it that needs to be updated to depend on ruby16-shlibs.
