Perhaps you are using the wrong system then. You might be better served to install Darwin and X11 yourself.
If your major complaint is the lack of broadband, you can get a full install of Linux from Terrasoft (Yellow Dog) on CD and don't have to touch the crippled MaOS at all.
However, I suspect that you are just grumpy from having to deal with a dialup connection.


I disagree that Apple should provide the X11 environment and complete CD access to Fink (and other) resources. They produce MacOS and offer, for free, an X11 implementation.
You could buy the XDarwin CD. It comes with many clients. You would still need to deal with your dialup to update those that you install.


Lastly, I know how not to get mauled by Tiger:  Don't install it.
