Many thanks for the repy. I removed all the fink freetype stuff, including libs etc. and the packages depending upon them, sudo moved /usr/local/ to /usr/local_tmp before compiling (and also tried with it in its usual place), and reinstalled the X11SDK (Jaguar version).
But installing pango1-xft1 still didn't work! Below is the error message at the end of the build.
So, I'm still stumped. Any help appreciated!

Here's the prove that you haven't moved /usr/local/lib out of the way before compiling.
