I am new to gnome. Several folks here run sawfish as the window manager.
Installing sawfish 1.1-26 requires:
rep-gtk >= 15.25, which requires:
librep >= 14-28, which requires:
libtiff-shlibs = 3.5.7-7 (note, note >=).

libtiff-shlibs 3.6.1-1 is installed.

Will this more current version break sawfish et al, or can 'apt-get -f install' be used for each of these?

No, it just won't install. If libtiff-shlibs-3.5.7-7 is still available via binary, you might be able to install it with

sudo apt-get install libtiff-shlibs=3.5.7-7

Will there need to be a link from 3.5.7-7 -> 3.6.1-1?

I strongly discourage this.

Does compiling from source solve this issue?

Only if you use the version in the unstable tree, which appears not to have a versioned dependency on libtiff.
