I am trying to run gramps so I have been trying to run fink on Mac OS
X 10.2.

I am using Fink commander.

When I tried to update fink, it downloaded fink-0.20.5.tar.gz, then
tried to make it and failed

make test
Can't exec "make": No such file or directory at /sw/lib/perl5/Fink/
Services.pm line 398.
### execution of make failed, exit code -1
Failed: compiling fink-0.20.5-1 failed

this seems to be the error described in the FAQ as needing the
developer tools.

(1) why are the devloper tools needed for a binary install, surely
the whole point of binary is that the tools are not needed?

(2) Next day I followed the instructions and selected fink and did a
Binary->Install, and this time it said it was up to date. How could
it be up to date when the previous update had failed?

(3) Later, trying to install gramps, can the report on the size of
transfer really be right, because it only says 104MB, but this will
be 31.3GB, is there a charcter missing somewhere?

0 packages upgraded, 87 newly installed, 0 to remove and 1 not
upgraded.
Need to get 104MB of archives. After unpacking 31.3GB will be used.

Then I tried to install xFree86 as that was one of the dependencies
of gramps. (as it was all so big, I thought I had better do it a bit
at at time to check it worked) Again I selected xFree86, and Binary->
Install.

This time, I had changed the config to a nearer mirror, and increased
the verbose level to see the download speed, and I got:

Reading package info...
Updating package index... done.
Information about 1307 packages read in 13 seconds.
The following package will be installed or updated:
 xfree86
The following 3 additional packages will be installed:
 dlcompat-dev dlcompat-shlibs xfree86-shlibs
Do you want to continue? [Y/n]
curl -f -L -O http://distfiles.lha.uk.eu.finkmirrors.net/dlcompat-
20030629.tar.gz

(4) Why did it not report the expected size of the transfer?

This time it failed with no C compiler:
patch -p1 </sw/fink/dists/stable/main/finkinfo/libs/dlcompat.patch
patching file dlfcn.c
./configure --prefix=/sw --enable-fink --mandir=/sw/share/man
checking for gcc... no
checking for cc... no
checking for cc... no
checking for cl... no
configure: error: no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH
See `config.log' for more details.
### execution of ./configure failed, exit code 1
Failed: compiling dlcompat-20030629-5 failed

(5) Again, why does it need to developer tools for binary.

(6) If I get the developer tools and do an install again, will it
notice that it has already downloaded the tarball? (The documentation
is explicit about many other cases, but not about install).

(By the way, part of the reason for the quetsion is that I am on a
slow link, so getting the developer tools will be slow).

thanks,
Tim.
