I reinstalled X11 and now have more files present to ls in my /lib.
I ran fink install kdebase3 and after an hour or two the command completed without errors that I could see. If I type startkde it starts. I tried to create an xinitrc file to start kde but it crashed X11. But thats another issue. I have made great progress with help from you and Mr Hansen. Thank you.
My next problem to solve is after Kde boots it X11 hangs when I try to close the KDE tips window. There are some interesting messages in the X11 window when it freezes. I did a screen copy before I killed X11 so I can red some off them. I'll let you what I figure out.

Is this second line indicating your second supposition that the libXaw.dylib is symlinked to a nonexistent file? There is no /usr/X11R6/lib/libXaw.7.0.dylib file either.
Yes, there is something seriously wrong with your X11 installation. You are missing some important files, and I am rather surprised that you got as far as you got with your compilation.
Assuming that you are running Apple's X11, you need to reinstall the X11User.pkg. This is the basic X11 package from the system CD, not the developer package. Or did you install some version of xfree86 from Fink or from xfree86.org? In that case, I cannot say in which part of the installation these library files should have come. Just reinstall all of xfree86 if this is your case.
