The command you want is

gnome-session

For instance, to open Gimp I type gimp-2.0 in xterm and it opens but gnome-2.6 gets me a 'no such file' response.

(aside) Actually, if you install the gimp2-default package, you can run gimp2 just by running "gimp"



Can you assume I'm pretty much clueless and walk me through it?


This one comes up a fair amount--it's mentioned in the docs, but not explicitly.
