Did the reinstall of XFree86 not write the needed missing files? It, unfortunately, is beyond me.

There is a list of many reasons why this can happen in the Fink documentation on running X11, link on the fink home page. The most common reason is a problem with your ~/.xinitrc file, for example that it quits at the end. You should look at the console log (by running Console.app from /Applications/Utilities), it shows the output from starting XDarwin.
