Read the thread http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.os.apple.fink.beginners/13562
You are probably another victim of Apple's buggy installer.
Many thanks, it worked. Details:
In the case of a freshly installed package, my little bomcheck script could be useful:
curl -O http://perso.wanadoo.fr/costabel/bomcheck sh bomcheck gcc3.1
It lists missing files. If there are any, reinstall gcc3.1.pkg.
bomcheck showed no missing files.
...the weirdo who packaged Xcode-1.2 put everything from /usr/lib/gcc/darwin/3.1 into the gcc3.1.pkg *except* crtbegin.o,
which is in DevSDK.pkg. In Xcode-1.5, it is in gcc3.1.pkg.
Since I'm using Xcode-1.5, I installed gcc3.1.pkg. That did indeed provide crtbegin.o; presumably due to this, compilation then proceeded to successful installation of gv.
