I think it's to hold fonts created by the libwmf package.

I moved them temporarily as I didn't know if I would need to put them back. Do you know what the directory "libwmf" is? I can always put it back and run the command that you suggest if it is unneeded. Again, its removal has allowed KDE to run and most of my fonts to work.

Thanks for all of the help Martin and Alexander. Your gentle, yet firm approach helped me figure out much of the issues. I deleted some fonts and alias's to fonts in /sw/lib/X11/fonts and now XDarwin seems to be ok and Gimp2 is launching. A strange thing is that Konsole in KDE has no fonts at all.
Any ideas?
