Thanks for the comments. The print out of a "set" command gives, XAPPLRESDIR=/sw/etc/app-defaults/
So this is being set OK by ~/.xinitrc. I have opened a ~/.Xresources file and added the equivalent of you settings as per the "fink describe xfig" info. The problem is not solved, I still get the xfig message re no app-defaults and on checking my "app-defaults" does not contain the Fig or Fig-color files . So these were not loaded in installation. I have tried a "fink reinstall xfig" but that seems to only open the and reinstall the -deb file and not change anything.
Something must have gone wrong when you built your xfig. My xfig deb file does contain the app-defaults files. In the xfig build log, I see the lines
install -c -o root -g wheel -m 0444 Fig.ad /sw/src/root-xfig-3.2.4-2/sw/etc/app-defaults/Fig
install -c -o root -g wheel -m 0444 Fig-color.ad /sw/src/root-xfig-3.2.4-2/sw/etc/app-defaults/Fig-color
Actually, they appear even twice. The xfig info files does "make install" and then "make install.all" which installs lots of things twice, but that doesn't explain why it is not installed at all in your casse. Do you get an error message or something at that place?
