Are you running an XWindows like XDarwin or Apple's X11? If so then you would type "gnome-session" into a xterm window and hit return. You may need to type "/sw/bin/gnome-session" and hit return. You need a window manager like quartz or Oroboro or fvwm2 or something to handle the display.
