Re you queries

If I open from the X11-xterm command line viz
R-John-Sandemans-Computer:~ rjsand$ xfig -bg grey -cbg white -centim -portrait &
[1] 433

i get what seems to be a fully operational xfig (as far as I have tested so far) in which export finds fig2dev.

If I open from the X11-xterm "applications" menu with,

/sw/bin/xfig -bg grey -cbg white -centim -portrait &

xfig appears to open as above but when I attempt to export, I get the error message in the xfig pop up.

Error during EXPORT. Messages:
 sh: line 1: fig2dev: command not found

What I have found now is a similar behaviour in using "texmacs" in that from the X11-applications some of the features are not available (eg. many of the export file types), but are there and OK if I open from the x11-xterm command line. I have not seen similar behaviour with emacs21, so far.

This is a well known issue with X11.app and is in the docs;

Check the part that starts "Applications that require calling other programs which reside within your Fink tree..."
