Greetings

I have just installed xmms from binaries on a dual 1.8 G5 with OS X 10.3.4. It doesn't work.

It gives me the "Couldn't open audio" error dialog.

Here's the related fink FAQ and my "responses" to it:

"eSound Output Plugin" is not available as a choice, only "OSS Driver 1.2.8 [libOSS.so]" and "DiskWriter Plugin [libdisk_writer.so]". Here's what's in the xmms output plugins folder:

Parker-Bo:/sw/lib/xmms/Output parkefb$ ls
libOSS.la libOSS.so libdisk_writer.la libdisk_writer.so

Note: no libesdout.so. A Finder search reveals that there is no file called libesdout.so anywhere on the machine.

Nope. Sound isn't muted. eSound is installed:

Parker-Bo:~ parkefb$ fink list -i esound
Information about 1920 packages read in 1 seconds.
i esound 0.2.32-4 Enlightened Sound Daemon
i esound-bin 0.2.32-4 Enlightened Sound Daemon
i esound-common 0.2.32-4 Enlightened Sound Daemon
i esound-shlibs 0.2.32-4 Enlightened Sound Daemon
Parker-Bo:~ parkefb$

Here's the info on xmms:

Parker-Bo:~ parkefb$ fink list -i xmms
Information about 1920 packages read in 1 seconds.
i xmms 1.2.8-1 Multimedia player development headers and libraries
i xmms-bin 1.2.8-1 Multimedia player for the X Window System
i xmms-shlibs 1.2.8-1 Multimedia player shared libraries
Parker-Bo:~ parkefb$

> decent size).

/usr/libexec/config.guess doesn't exist on my machine. But I can use esdcat to successfully play other .aif sound files on my machine.

Starting and quitting esd manually gives

Parker-Bo:/tmp parkefb$ esd
using device Built-in Audio for output:
        with sample rate 44100.000000, 2 channels and 32-bit sample
using device Built-in Audio for input:
        with sample rate 44100.000000, 2 channels and 32-bit sample
^CParker-Bo:/tmp parkefb$

No error messages.

/tmp/.esd doesn't exist on this machine.

I have done

$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

and no change.

Any help is appreciated!
