Thanks a lot for the response. Typing open-x11 xfig at an OSX terminal prompt worked, but not typing xfig at an X11 terminal prompt. Any guesses what is going on there? I had tried just typing xfig at the X11 prompt before and it didn't work. That's why I was so confused. I can now type xfig at an X11 prompt once xfig has been opened though the OSX terminal prompt, but will not open directly from the X11 prompt if i quit X11 and then reopen X11 without using the OSX terminal. Maybe I messed something up during the install of Fink/Xfig ??

Try changing the Terminal entry in the X11 Application menu to run "xterm -ls" instead of "xterm". This is a known issue with Apple's X11--it doesn't honor a user's environment settings.
