I checked and gnome-libs wasn't installed, so I said

fink install gnome-libs

which went fine too, apparently. But it didn't help, there's still no gnomeConf.sh to be found anywhere.

So my questions are these: what do I need to do to get that gnomeConf.sh
file on the system and what would I have to do to check if all those
dependencies are really neccessary? I mean all that Gnome stuff and xorg
and the like just to get one program running?

Hopefully I've provided enough information, if not please tell me what
else you need. I'd appreciate any pointers, hints and tipps as I am not
yet very familiar with Fink and it's functionality.

Thanks in advance!

Do you have gnome-libs-dev? That's what provides the files that showed up as missing.
