I cannot thank you enough for sturggling through this convoluted 
proceess (to me at least) and finally coming up with a fix. I'll now 
try to update kde and see what happens. I'll talk to you in a couple 
of weeks.

   Well I thought that I'd see what would happen and tried updating kde 
while packing and I came back to this. Any ideas?
