What exactly did you do and what happened? Normally typing "xchat" at the command line is sufficient.
Here's a copy of the terminal session, showing the error message:
Last login: Mon Jan 17 15:06:53 on ttyp1 Welcome to Darwin! iMac:~ sheilaking$ which xchat /sw/bin/xchat iMac:~ sheilaking$ xchat
(xchat:503): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: iMac:~ sheilaking$
Fwiw, I am able to successfully launch X11 using the startx command in the terminal, so X11 is good.
iMac:~ sheilaking$ which x /usr/X11R6/bin/x iMac:~ sheilaking$
It looks like there is some problem with my Gtk.
I didn't specifically install it prior to installing xchat. Maybe this is the problem?
Wish there had been some comments about dependencies or what needed to be installed first, in that case.
Can anyone advise me on how to proceed at this point? I have successfully installed Aqua-Xchat (which is not part of Fink at all) and it is working ok, but I see it is a significantly out-of-date version of xchat, and I'd rather try working with Fink, as there are a number of other packages and programs I will plan to install if I can get the knack.
Thanks,
