To be fair, FinkCommander *did ask* if I wanted to upgrade. Since it was working, I chose not to. It hasn't asked me since. Mistake on my part??
I chose the xfree86 at the top of the list in Fink Commander....which happened to BE 4.3....I HAD a lesser version (4.2?) successfully running on the Powerbook I sent off to my son...and it WAS in /sw/src. Until I deleted it in the process, sort of cleaning up (or so I thought). ACTually, xfree86bbase-4.2.1.1-16 folder is STILL in my trash....
Wonder where to go from here....I could just HOSE the entire /sw directory, the x11 v. 4.3 I have installed, reel in from Apple that which you referred to....
OR somehow upgrade Fink//FinkCommander, and just start from scrath. I'm well aware of slippery-slope syndrome.

That's a really, really old version of the Fink distribution (>1 year old). (Fink Commander is current, and its version isn't relevant here anyway).
You should start by updating Fink. You can do this most simply via
Binary->Update descriptions
followed by
Binary->Dist-Upgrade Packages
This will update you to the current Fink distribution and should bring you a working version of XFree86 as well.

The development headers are part of XCode for some perverse reason.
, so i go BACK to Fink, and re-initiate the xfree86-4.3.0 install and it works! As in machine compiled code for an hour or so (kept the window open to try and cool the box).
On completion, a new icon appears in Applications, 'XDarwin. It's creation date is today...hmmm. I click on it, and:
2005-01-18 08:32:10.207 XDarwin[11691] No Info.plist file in application bundle or no NSPrincipalClass in the Info.plist file, exiting
It won't launch.
The XDarwin app; what is it's launch-failure warning telling me, and what stone may I have left unturned here? I feel I am SO CLOSE to regaining use of X, and hence Gimp.....

Ummm...XFree86-4.3 was broken on Panther and was pulled a while ago from the 10.3 distribution of Fink. You can get a later version from the binary distribution now, too.
What version of Fink are you running?
