In my case, it's not clear from the not whether this means setting DISPLAY in the local session or the remote ssh session. I set in both the local (csh) session with 'setenv DISPLAY :0', and in the remote (bash)session with 'export DISPLAY=:0'. In both cases I tested with echo $DISPLAY, to check it had been set.
Error message is the same.
I meant the local machine.
One other thing to check here is whether your Mac has X11Forwarding enabled in it's sshd_config file (e.g. /etc/sshd_config if you are using the builtin ssh). Edit it as root, e.g. via "sudo pico sshd_config", and look for the X11Forwarding line.
